Legacy Building: Adopting a "YET" Mindset

Recently someone sent me an encouraging post "THE POWER OF YET". At that time, I was experiencing two deaths in my family and was feeling overwhelmed. After reading the four points over and over, I began to appreciate the concept and immediately applied it to my situation.



On a personal level, you may be navigating job loss, death of a loved, divorce, high cost of living, low wages, indebtedness, delinquent children, and disfunction in your families, to highlight a few.


On the professional side, you may be facing burnout from your ever-increasing workload, multiple deadlines, ongoing work conflicts, overwork because of delinquent team members, low productivity, disengagement, and the list goes on.


Whatever your stressors or challenges, it might be useful to adopt these five "YET" perspectives:

  1. I cannot see the solutions "YET".

  2. I do not have the answers to why I am going through this "YET".

  3. I have not developed or mastered the coping skills I need to effectively manage what I am going through "YET".

  4. I do not have the courage to ask for help "YET".

  5. I have not developed the capabilities I need to survive on my own "YET".


Let's unpack the above perspectives:


"YET" serves as a reminder that your current state is not permanent. There are answers and solutions that you have not thought through or identified "YET".


"YET" shifts your focus from your problems to possibilities and solutions.


"YET" steers you in the direction of the things you can control, actions you can take, pitfalls you should avoid, and outcomes you can influence.


"YET" gives you the courage to seek help when you feel overwhelmed from trying and failing.


"YET" directs you to the path that will move you from your current state, through a transition state, to a better state.


"YET" prevents stress from becoming distress and provides you enough eustress to fuel your growth and development, ward off any tendency to live in despair, give way to anger, or live hopelessly.


The lessons you learn from adopting a "YET" Mindset, will serve you well in the future, and become a legacy that keeps on giving as you share your stories with those who seek your mentorship and advice.
